III. PROFESSIONAL POSITIONS:
Deputy Head of the Organizing Committee and Artistic Advisor, Vietnam International Music Competition, Hanoi, Vietnam - 2019-present
The first Vietnam International Music Competition, under the patronage of the Vietnam Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, was held from 3rd to 11th of August 2019, in the Grand Concert Hall of Vietnam National Academy of Music. It was the first time an international competition for violin and ensemble groups of piano and string instruments was hosted in Vietnam. Many critically acclaimed artists and professors from leading universities and conservatories in the United States, Russia, Switzerland, Germany, Hungary, Ukraine, Australia, South Korea, China, Japan, and Vietnam, among them Viktor Tretyakov, Stephanie Chase, Vilmos Szabadi, Kyung Sun Lee, and Chen Xi had accepted the invitations to join the jury of the competition. With the jury’s dream team consisted of many top-prize winners of the most prestigious international music competitions including Queen Elisabeth Competition and International Tchaikovsky International Competition, the Competition had attracted talented candidates from all over the world, contributing to a top-class stage where Vietnamese young musicians had a chance to compete and learn, to gain valuable experiences and be inspired to improve oneself in the process of building their musical careers. The final round of the competition, in which the candidates performed with Hanoi’s Sun Symphony Orchestra under the direction of conductor Olivier Ochanine, was broadcast live world-wide by The Violin Channel.
As the Deputy Head of the Organizing Committee and Artistic Advisor, I am actively involved in the process of finding donors and supporters, judging and inviting judges, organizing and implementing concerts, thematic programming, and educational workshops. With a burning desire to create the best conditions for international exchange right in the heart of Hanoi to leverage the development of Vietnam’s young musical talents and launch them on the furthest orbits, I hope that the competition will make it possible for the young generation of musical talents as well as strings, piano and the classical music circle in Vietnam to reach new successes on the international levels, while bringing Vietnam to the awareness of the young people in the world.
Founder, Artistic & Executive Director, International Chamber Players, Dallas, Texas, USA - 2015-present
International Chamber Players (ICP) was founded in 2015 on the idea of “music without borders.” With its main focuses on international collaboration in the performance and teaching of classical music, International Chamber Players brings together some of today’s most distinguished artists as well as dedicated and rising young musicians for chamber music concerts and educational and outreach programs both in the US and abroad. Since its birth International Chamber Players has organized many successful tours to Vietnam. These tours include appearances in Vietnam's major concert halls such as Hanoi Opera House, Ho Chi Minh City Opera House, Vietnam National Academy of Music Grand Concert Hall, Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music Concert Hall, French Institute L’Espace Hanoi, and Goethe Institute Hanoi. Guest artists on recent International Chamber Players tours have included international renowned artists such as Jeff Bradetich, Stephanie Chase, Xi Chen, Susan Dubois, Hector Guzman, Jean-Louis Haguenauer, Christoph Hammer, David Itkin, Paul Leenhouts, Cynthia Roberts, James Scott, Vilmos Szabadi, Allen Whear, Christopher Zimmermann, Quartet Arod, Quartet Ulysses, and the musicians of the world-class Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra as well as outstanding young musicians from leading institutes including The Julliard School, Manhattan School of Music, Indiana University and University of North Texas, among others. In June 2019 ICP, in collaboration with Yi-Chen Artist Management, made its first tour with three concerts in Taiwan. A strong advocate for classical music education,
International Chamber Players has partnered with the leading Vietnamese institutions such as Vietnam National Academy of Music, Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music, and Hue Academy of Music to offer lessons and masterclasses to many students, giving them opportunities to work with internationally recognized artists. Dedicated to bring unique classical musical experiences to worldwide audiences, International Chamber Players aims to bring classical music closer the general public.
As the Artistic and Executive Director of ICP, I am responsible and accountable for the overall management of the organization, including strategic planning, artistic administration, contracting artists, concert production, budgeting and fundraising, public relations, education, and community engagement. I have successfully solicited grants and funding from local and national agencies on an annual basis.
Co-founder & Artistic Director, Vietnam Connection Music Festival, Hanoi, Vietnam - 2015-present
Founded in 2015, Vietnam Connection Music Festival (VNCMF) brings distinguished international artists as well as accomplished Vietnamese musicians who live abroad to Vietnam to collaborate with outstanding Vietnamese artists in the performance and teaching of classical music. Thanks to the dedication of Vietnamese and international musicians, the generous sponsorship of Vietnam and overseas business and civic groups, and the enthusiasm of the general public, Vietnam Connection Music Festival is currently in its eighth season.
After the successes of the first two seasons in 2015 and 2016, VNCMF 2017 took place from August 12th to 26th in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Hue. Audiences of all ages have had the opportunities to enjoy 11 special concerts, with the participation of nearly 40 leading Vietnamese and international artists from the United States, France, Russia, Ukraine, Australia, Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong, and China. As education an important element in the operation of VNCMF, six talented young violinists aged 10 to 17 years old from prestigious Vietnamese music schools have been selected to participate in the festival. VNCMF provided them with the opportunity to study with internationally acclaimed music educators as well as practiced their performing skills along professional artists in the 3 concerts designed especially for them in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Hue. In the 2018 season the festival welcomed nearly 50 musicians from Vietnam and 4 continents of the world, who presented 11 concerts in Hanoi, Danang, and Ho Chi Minh City. For the first time VNCMF featured 3 orchestral concerts by its orchestra-in-residence Vietnam Classical Players, with repertoire ranging from early baroque to late romantic. Other highlights of the 2018 season include the debut of the concert series Vietnam Connection Music Festival Abroad with a concert at the Voertman Concert Hall in Texas, USA by Vietnamese conductor Tran Vuong Thach, Vietnamese zither soloist Nguyen Hai Phuong and the University of North Texas Festival Orchestra, featuring works by Vietnamese composers Tran Ding Lang and Hoang Cuong and a Vietnam tour by the Vietnam Classical Players to celebrate the European Day, an event organized and sponsored by the Delegation of European Union, the Embassy of the European Union Member States, and the European Cultural Institutes. In August 2019 VNCMF co-organized the inaugural Vietnam International Music Competition for Violin and Chamber Music, which was an outstanding success garnering worldwide attention and acclaim. VNCMF has been considered as one of the most anticipated music events in Vietnam.
As the Artistic Director of the festival, I am in charge of selecting and inviting international artists as well as creating music programs to be performed at the festival. I am also actively involved in the process of finding new sponsorship and developing global partners for the festival. At present, VNCMF has partnership with over 20 organizations in Vietnam and abroad.
